电视广播,住在歌剧院

Apologies in advance for the general thickness of this post; had a bit too much fun last night. First, off to the Drake for the launch ofLavalife Magazine,a new online mag concerned with, of course, the highs and lows of the single life. Brenda Canning of Broken Social Scene was spinning fun, uncheesy tunes and there was a massive candy buffet complete with miniature cupcakes. I ran into loads of old co-workers, drank loads of wine and ate not much. Good times.

Then, off to see Tv on the Radio, thanks of course to Bianca. Sorry for the bad picture, it's hard to be short.

I arrived at the Opera House in time to catch about half of the first act, Boston's Grizzly Bear, who were pretty interesting, I'd never heard them before. Some songs had a romantic, almost 50s pop tinge, whereas others were moodier landscapes more in the vein of the headliners. The reunion theme of the evening continued--I ran into yet another co-worker plus two old university-day friends who I never see anymore as they live in exotic Hamilton.

I hadn't heard much of "Return to Cookie Mountain" before this, which is why I was siked to go. I like that their sound is dark and foreboding, but the percussive end of things keeps everyone engaged. It was a pretty small ensemble, just five people onstage (though Grizzly Bear came out for the "Staring at the Sun" encore) but the sound was full and lush, creating that big TVOTR atmosphere. At this point I must admit that I was also busy enjoying myself, without paying very keen attention to the tracks (this is why I never did do music reviews). I remember "Wolf Like Me," of course, and past biggies like "Young Liars." The vibe was good--the Opera House is possibly my favourite concert venue in the city now that Lee's Palace has gotten all serious about capacity. The best part of a sold-out show is the sweaty energy, which was in abundane last night, everyone was very into the music and glad to be there. So thanks Bianca, for the tickets, and sorry that this hungover review isn't doing the show justice.
